Dead Heat rules: what is it?

Dead Heat is a relatively rare situation that can happen on horse racing or greyhound racing markets, but also on golf and some soccer markets available on Betkeen. Dead Heat is basically a tie between two or more competitors in an event. On horse racing, a photo finish will be used to determine who is the winner, however there are times when it is so close that announcing a winner is impossible. In case of a Dead Heat situation, you will win part of your bet and lose part of your bet. Below is how the winnings or losses are calculated.

How will a Dead Heat impact my bet?

A Dead Heat case is calculated by dividing the stake proportionally between the number of tied winners in the event. Therefore, in a two-way Dead Heat (two official winners) for instance, your return will be 50% of what it could have been.

For a quite simple calculation, please read the following formulas:
  • On Win markets with two winners tied: [(Stake / 2) x (Odds - 1)] - (Stake / 2) = your profit or loss.
  • On Win markets with more than two winners tied: [(Stake / Number of tied winners) x (Odds - 1)] - [Stake x (Number of tied winners - 1) / Number of tied winners] = your profit or loss.
  • On To Be Placed markets: [(Stake x Number of payouts / Number of tied winners) x (Odds - 1)] - [Stake x (Number of tied winners - Number of payouts) / Number of tied winners] = your profit or loss.

An alternative way is to compare your possibilities of the outcomes: a Dead Heat situation between two competitors will be in the middle of your best and worst case scenario.

Please note that these formulas are the same for Back bets and Lay bets.

Example: On a golf tournament in the Top 10 Finish market, there is a Dead Heat with 6 players:

You placed a back bet on Justin Rose with 100 euros @ 8.6. The player is tied at the ninth place with five other players. In this case, there are 5 players sharing two payout places: 9th and 10th place.

(Stake x Number of payouts / Number of tied runners) x (Odds - 1) - [Stake x (Number of tied winners - Number of payouts) / Number of tied winners] = your profit or loss. Therefore, this is your result: (100 x 2 / 5) x (8.6 - 1) - [100 x (5 - 2) / 5] = 244 euros.
